ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has become India’s first integrated steel producer to secure Green Steel certification under the Ministry of Steel’s newly introduced Green Steel Taxonomy. The company’s hot rolled (HR) coils and sheets have been awarded a four-star rating, while its cold rolled (CR) coils and sheets have received a three-star rating under the certification framework.
The certified products, which are widely used across sectors such as automotive, infrastructure, defence, construction equipment, and consumer durables, are now officially recognised as government-certified Green Steel. This enables downstream customers to lower Scope 3 emissions across their value chains.
Under the Green Steel Taxonomy, eligibility for certification is determined by emissions intensity, with a qualifying threshold of less than 2.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per tonne of finished steel (tCO₂e/tfs). Steel produced below this limit is classified under a three-tier rating system comprising three-star, four-star, and five-star Green Steel categories.
AM/NS India’s certification followed a detailed audit conducted by the National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology, which validated that the company’s flagship flat steel products meet the prescribed Green Steel criteria.
Commenting on the milestone, Dilip Oommen, Chief Executive Officer of AM/NS India, said the Green Steel Taxonomy provides a clear roadmap for decarbonisation in the steel sector. He noted that the certification reflects the company’s sustained efforts to reduce its carbon footprint through investments in low-carbon processes and clean energy, while supporting national climate objectives and maintaining global competitiveness.
The company’s flat steel portfolio benefits from a structurally lower-carbon production profile. Around 65 percent of AM/NS India’s steelmaking capacity is based on the direct reduced iron route using natural gas, significantly lowering dependence on coal-based processes. This transition has enabled the company to achieve more than a 35 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions intensity since 2015.
Emissions performance is further supported by the use of renewable energy. AM/NS India receives clean power from a hybrid renewable energy project of about 1 GW capacity in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, developed by AM Green Energy. The project began supplying electricity to the company’s Hazira plant in Gujarat in 2025.
In December 2025, ArcelorMittal announced plans to invest approximately USD 0.9 billion in three additional renewable energy projects located in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, with the generated power to be supplied to AM/NS India. Once completed, these projects will double ArcelorMittal’s renewable energy capacity in India to 2 GW.
Alongside this, AM/NS India is developing its own 550 MW hybrid renewable energy project at Bhachau in Gujarat, comprising 300 MW of solar capacity and 250 MW of wind power. The project is expected to result in annual carbon dioxide savings of around 0.9 million tonnes.
Following the certification, AM/NS India has begun commercial production of four-star rated HR products and three-star rated CR products. The company said this will provide domestic customers with a government-verified green steel option while reinforcing India’s position as a sustainable and competitive global steel producer.
In FY25, AM/NS India recorded carbon dioxide emissions intensity that was 14 percent lower than the national average. The company has set a target to reduce its emissions intensity by 20 percent by 2030, compared to its 2021 baseline.
