Himachal Pradesh Floats Tenders for Ropeway Projects to Boost Connectivity
In a significant step towards enhancing urban and regional connectivity in Himachal Pradesh, the state government has issued tenders for two major ropeway projects in Shimla district. These projects aim to provide efficient, eco-friendly, and congestion-free transportation solutions.
Shimla Urban Ropeway Project (Phase 2)
The first tender has been floated for the development, operation, and maintenance of the Innovative Urban Ropeway Transport Network in Shimla (Phase 2) under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) mode. This Rs 3,500 crore project will establish an aerial ropeway transit network in Shimla, including stations and a network management system, ensuring safer, faster, and environmentally sustainable mobility within the city. The initiative aims to reduce road congestion, promote a transport modal shift, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. The final date for bid submission is 4 March 2025, with the tender issued by the Ropeways and Rapid Transport System Development Corporation H.P. Ltd.
Narkanda-Hatu Peak Ropeway Project
The second tender has been issued for the proposed Narkanda to Hatu Peak Ropeway, also under the DBFOT model. With a tentative length of 3.10 km, this ropeway is designed to improve accessibility to Hatu Peak, a prominent destination in Shimla district. The project is valued at Rs 206 crore, and like the Shimla ropeway project, the bid submission deadline is 4 March 2025.
Enhancing Sustainable Transport
Both projects align with the state’s vision of modernizing transport infrastructure, reducing road traffic, and promoting sustainable tourism and urban mobility. The ropeway systems will not only enhance connectivity and convenience for residents and visitors but also contribute to environmental conservation by minimizing vehicular emissions.
