Hyderabad Metro Rail expansion in focus as Telangana CM seeks Centre’s support for major infrastructure projects
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to approve and support several key infrastructure projects in the state, including the second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail. He emphasized Telangana’s commitment to contributing $1 trillion to India’s goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy and stressed the need for improved railway infrastructure to drive economic growth.
PM Modi inaugurated various railway projects, including the new Cherlapally terminal station in Hyderabad and the Jammu railway division, during a virtual event. Reddy expressed gratitude for the new terminal while advocating for additional development projects. He also highlighted Telangana’s fall from second to ninth place in terms of metro rail network length due to delays in expansion over the past decade.
The Chief Minister appealed for the swift establishment of the integrated railway coach factory at Kazipet, a previously approved project, and requested a dedicated railway line connecting Machilipatnam port in Andhra Pradesh to Telangana. He also acknowledged the state’s landlocked position and emphasized the need for improved freight transport. Reddy proposed the development of a dry port and a regional ring rail project alongside Hyderabad’s Regional Ring Road (RRR), which he believes would drive urbanization in 60 percent of the state.
Union Minister of State for Railways V Somanna highlighted the Centre’s increased investment in Telangana’s railway sector, mentioning a larger railway budget allocation. Over the past decade, Telangana has gained 346 km of new railway lines, doubled or tripled 370 km of tracks, and electrified over 1,000 km of routes.
