Northeast Connectivity: Tripura to Launch Electric Train Services by February as Indian Railways Finalize Rs 46-Crore Electrification Project

Electric train services in Tripura are expected to begin by February, following the completion of a significant electrification project aimed at integrating the state into India’s national railway network.

The Rs 46-crore project, launched in 2022, represents a key shift from diesel-powered to electric trains, officials announced on Monday (6 January). The North Eastern Railways (NFR) has successfully electrified the railway line from Badarpur to Agartala via Dharmanagar.

The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) is preparing to supply power to the railway transmission line, supported by the construction of three traction power substations.

Nirupam Guha, Assistant General Manager (Transmission) of TSECL, provided updates, stating, “We have completed the erection of the Kumarghat substation in Unakoti district as of March last year.” The Udaipur substation in Gomati district is set for completion this month, while the Teliamura substation in Khowai district will be operational by February.

Guha added, “Once these three substations are complete, TSECL will be fully prepared to energize the railway electric transmission line from Dharmanagar to Agartala.” The Railways have requested a daily power supply of 5 MW per substation, with provisions for increased demand if needed.

The project is expected to bring significant benefits, including the introduction of faster and more advanced trains, boosting infrastructure and supporting economic growth in Tripura. “This initiative will play a pivotal role in the state’s development,” Guha remarked.

Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR, confirmed that electrification on the Badarpur-Agartala route is complete, except for the hilly Lumding-Badarpur section. “Efforts are underway to finish the Lumding-Agartala electrification as soon as possible,” Sharma added.

The completion of the project is anticipated to improve connectivity, reduce travel time, and contribute to Tripura’s overall development.
