Indore Metro Nearing Launch: Priority Corridor Prepared, Awaiting CMRS Approval
Indore is set to launch its highly anticipated metro rail services, with the process of submitting
essential documents to the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) now in its final stages.
According to officials from the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL), the
metro services are likely to begin either later this month or in February, contingent on receiving
approval from the CMRS.
“The submission of necessary documents to the CMRS by the MPMRCL is nearing completion.
Once submitted, the CMRS will evaluate the safety measures and schedule an inspection of the
depot and stations along the metro rail,” stated an MPMRCL official, as reported by Financial
Express.
The initial operations will cover a 5.90 km priority corridor, stretching from Gandhi Nagar station
to station number three on the Super Corridor.
This segment previously underwent its first trial run in September last year.
While the launch has generated significant excitement, officials anticipate low initial passenger
demand due to the sparsely populated areas along the route. However, they remain confident
about the metro’s potential for growth.
The officials have stated that “Once the metro rail expands and covers additional routes, we are
certain there will be no shortage of passengers.”
The stations along the priority corridor are designed to accommodate six-coach trains. Initially,
the metro will operate with three-coach trains, with the flexibility to add three more coaches as
passenger demand increases. Each metro car has a capacity of up to 300 passengers,
including seating for 50.
The foundation stone for the Indore Metro Rail Project was laid on 14 September 2019.
The Rs 7,500.80 crore project envisions a 31.50 km ring-shaped metro corridor, connecting key
areas across the city.
