Phase-I of Bharatmala Pariyojana is likely to be completed by 2027–28: MoRTH
In its annual report, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways stated that the first phase of the Modi government's flagship Bharatmala project, which has exceeded its expenditure limit, is expected to be completed by 2027–28. The ministry stated in its Annual Report 2023–24 that the revised financial proposal for the Bharatmala project is under process for approval.
In the initial phase of the Bharatmala Pariyojana, a total of 34,800 kilometres of roads will be constructed in 31 states and union territories, as well as in more than 550 districts.
According to the report, the approved length is 26,425 km, and 17,411 km of road have been constructed so far. It is expected that the program will be completed by 2027–28. In June 2017, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved Bharatmala Phase-I.
The Bharatmala Pariyojana envisages the development of approximately 26,000 kilometres of economic corridors. These corridors, along with the Golden Quadrilateral (GQ) and North-South and East-West (NS-EW) Corridors are expected to account for the majority of freight traffic on roads.
Furthermore, approximately 8,500 km of interstate corridors and 7,500 km of feeder routes have been identified for improving the effectiveness of the Economic Corridors, GQ, and NS-EW Corridors.
