Pune Set for Major Highway Upgrade as Maharashtra Clears Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur Corridor

Talegaon Chakan Shikrapur highway expansion project in Pune to ease congestion and improve industrial logistics connectivity
Maharashtra approves major upgrade of Pune’s industrial corridor to improve traffic flow and logistics efficiency.

The Maharashtra government has approved a major highway upgrade project for the Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur corridor, aimed at easing congestion and strengthening connectivity in one of Pune’s busiest industrial belts.

The project involves the widening and upgradation of the existing 53.2-km corridor, which currently faces heavy traffic pressure due to large volumes of industrial and freight movement. The route is a key link connecting major highways and industrial hubs around Pune.

As part of the upgrade, the corridor will be developed into a multi-lane highway, including elevated stretches and at-grade road sections, designed to improve traffic flow and reduce bottlenecks. The project is expected to significantly enhance logistics efficiency and travel time reliability in the region.

The highway is strategically important as it connects key industrial zones such as Chakan and Talegaon, which are home to major manufacturing clusters and handle substantial daily vehicular movement. Currently, the stretch handles over 40,000 passenger car units (PCUs) daily, leading to frequent congestion and delays.

The project is being implemented by the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) and is part of broader efforts to upgrade critical infrastructure in the Pune region. It is also expected to support smoother connectivity between Mumbai–Pune and Pune–Nashik corridors, improving regional mobility.
Once completed, the upgraded highway will decongest urban traffic, improve freight movement, and enhance road safety, while supporting industrial growth and economic activity in the region.

The approval of this project reflects the state’s continued focus on strengthening road infrastructure in high-growth industrial corridors, particularly in and around Pune, where traffic demand has been rising rapidly.
