NHAI to Deploy AI-Powered Dashcam Monitoring Across 40,000 km of National Highways

NHAI AI dashcam monitoring national highways India smart infrastructure road safety
NHAI launches AI-powered dashcam monitoring system across 40,000 km of national highways to enhance safety and maintenance efficiency.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to roll out an AI-powered dashcam monitoring system across nearly 40,000 km of national highways, marking a major step toward smart and data-driven highway management.

The system, known as Dashcam Analytics Services (DAS), will leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to monitor road conditions, improve maintenance efficiency, and enhance safety across India’s highway network.

Under the initiative, dashboard cameras will be installed on Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs), which will conduct weekly surveys of highway stretches. These cameras will capture high-resolution images and video data, which will be analysed using AI models.

The AI system will be capable of detecting over 30 types of defects and anomalies, including:
•Potholes, cracks, and pavement damage
•Faded lane markings and damaged crash barriers
•Non-functional streetlights and road infrastructure issues
•Illegal encroachments, unauthorized signboards, and unsafe median openings

To further strengthen monitoring, night-time inspections will also be conducted periodically to assess visibility, lighting systems, reflectors, and signage performance.

The entire highway network will be divided into five zones, supported by a dedicated digital platform that will manage data, run AI analytics, and present insights through interactive dashboards. This will allow authorities to track road conditions over time and ensure faster repairs.

The initiative is expected to significantly improve road safety, reduce response time for maintenance, and enhance overall travel experience, as NHAI moves toward a more technology-driven and proactive highway management system.

Overall, this deployment reflects India’s growing focus on smart infrastructure, where AI and real-time data are being integrated to make highways safer, more efficient, and future-ready.
