Somalev has successfully completed the dismantling of two Liebherr ship-to-shore (STS) cranes at the Port of Casablanca, deploying its LTM 1400-7.1 all-terrain mobile crane for the operation.

The assignment formed part of ongoing modernisation works at the Moroccan port facility. The project required the safe removal of large STS cranes that had previously been used for container handling operations. Given the scale and structural complexity of the equipment, the dismantling process involved detailed planning, load calculations and coordinated site execution.

For the task, Somalev utilised its seven-axle LTM 1400-7.1, a 400-tonne class mobile crane designed for high lifting capacities and long boom configurations. The crane’s telescopic boom, combined with appropriate counterweight configuration, enabled the lifting team to manage heavy and oversized crane components efficiently within the operational constraints of the port environment.

The dismantling process was carried out in phases. Major structural elements including the crane booms, machinery houses, counterweights, and supporting steel structures were carefully separated and lowered in controlled sequences. Each lift required precise coordination between crane operators, rigging teams and site engineers to ensure stability and adherence to safety protocols.

Working within a port setting added further complexity to the operation, as the team had to manage space limitations, ground bearing requirements and coordination with other ongoing activities in the area. The LTM 1400-7.1’s mobility and load capacity proved essential in executing the heavy lifts while maintaining operational safety.

Upon completion of the dismantling works, the crane components were prepared for transport in accordance with the client’s relocation and logistics plan. The project highlights Somalev’s capabilities in handling large-scale port infrastructure assignments and complex heavy lifting operations involving maritime equipment.

The successful execution at the Port of Casablanca adds to the company’s experience in industrial dismantling, port equipment handling and engineered lifting solutions across international projects.
