Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone in March for the ₹22,864-crore Silchar–Guwahati High-Speed Corridor, a transformative rail infrastructure project aimed at slashing travel time between Assam’s Barak Valley and the state capital by nearly half while strengthening connectivity across the Northeast.

The proposed high-speed rail link will connect Silchar in southern Assam with Guwahati, significantly reducing the current travel duration and improving passenger mobility between the two key urban centres. The corridor is expected to enhance economic integration, boost regional trade and improve access to essential services.

Officials said the project will incorporate upgraded track infrastructure, advanced signalling systems and modern station facilities designed to support higher operational speeds compared to conventional rail services. The investment of ₹22,864 crore will cover civil works, railway systems, land acquisition and associated infrastructure development.

The foundation-stone ceremony in March will formally initiate the implementation phase, including detailed engineering work and preparatory construction activities.

The corridor forms part of broader efforts to upgrade infrastructure in the Northeast, with a focus on reducing logistical constraints and improving connectivity between remote regions and major economic hubs. Authorities expect the project to generate employment during both construction and operational stages while contributing to long-term regional growth.

Once completed, the Silchar–Guwahati High-Speed Corridor is expected to redefine rail travel in Assam, offering faster, safer and more efficient connectivity across the state.
