TBM ‘Eagle’ achieves first underground tunnel breakthrough on Corridor 4 of Chennai Metro Phase 2.

The Chennai Metro Phase 2 project achieved a major construction milestone with the first underground tunnel breakthrough on Corridor 4. The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) named Eagle successfully completed the initial section of subterranean excavation, marking a significant step forward in expanding the city’s rapid transit network.

The breakthrough took place on Corridor 4, which forms an integral part of the Phase 2 alignment designed to enhance connectivity across key urban areas in Chennai. Corridor 4 is planned to link Poonamallee Bypass on the western side with Thirumangalam in the central business district, facilitating smoother, faster travel for commuters and reducing surface traffic congestion.

The TBM “Eagle” has been deployed to excavate large stretches of twin tunnels along the underground section of the line. The successful breakthrough indicates progress in the complex process of tunnelling under densely populated urban zones, where geological conditions and existing infrastructure require precise execution and coordination.

Officials involved in the metro expansion project noted that the first breakthrough underscores both technical capability and effective project management. The Phase 2 network, once complete, will significantly expand the reach of Chennai’s metro system, providing improved last-mile connectivity and supporting the city’s long-term public transport goals.

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has been advancing multiple segments of Phase 2 in parallel, including both elevated and underground sections. The tunnel breakthrough is expected to build momentum for subsequent tunnelling activities as the project progresses toward future milestones.

In addition to easing commuter movement, the expanded network under Phase 2 is designed to support economic growth corridors within the metropolitan region and reduce travel times across major residential and commercial hubs.

With ongoing tunnelling works and civil construction activities proceeding on schedule, the Chennai Metro Phase 2 project continues to move closer to operational readiness for its various corridors as per the planned timelines.
