Mr. Rishi Raj Singh, Head OE Sales – APAC, Balkrishna Industries Ltd. (BKT), sharing insights on innovation, sustainability, and growth trends at EXCON 2025.

Q. EXCON 2025 brought together a wide cross-section of OEMs, contractors, and global buyers. From the interactions and discussions at your stand, what key insights did you gain about how customer expectations and how is BKT aligning its R&D and innovation strategy?

At EXCON 2025, we showcased our next generation of off-highway tyre solutions, meticulously designed to meet the evolving needs of the construction, mining, and material-handling sectors. It offered us the perfect platform for us to demonstrate these innovations and connect with partners who are shaping the future of India’s infrastructure growth.

As technology continues to advance, BKT’s R&D team remains closely attuned to emerging trends, working in step with OEM developments and anticipating how these shifts will influence future tyre performance expectations. This integrated approach highlights BKT’s evolution from being a tyre manufacturer to a trusted strategic partner in progress. By consistently delivering reliability, innovation, and value, BKT continues to support India’s agriculture, construction, and mining sectors, contributing meaningfully to their sustained growth.

Q. How is BKT advancing sustainability in agriculture and off-highway tyres? Is BKT integrating eco-friendly materials, processes, or recycling initiatives into its product lines?

Sustainability is at the core of BKT’s long-term strategy, inspiring innovation across both our products and manufacturing processes. Through ongoing R&D, we are steadily increasing the use of renewable materials and replacing petrochemical components in our tyres with sustainable alternatives.

In FY 2024-25, 32% of our raw materials are renewable. Alongside these material innovations, we have enhanced resource efficiency, increased renewable energy usage, recycled over 98% of process waste, and reduced dependence on non-renewable energy sources. This integrated approach allows us to innovate more rapidly and deliver products that align with our vision.

We continuously optimise our manufacturing processes to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and operate more sustainably. Carbon black is a critical raw material, making up nearly 30% of a tyre’s composition. To ensure a stable, high-quality supply, BKT established its own carbon black manufacturing facility at our flagship plant in Bhuj. Our in-house product, BKT Carbon supports internal production and is also supplied to the market. The plant also operates as a zero-liquid-discharge facility with complete water recycling, while ongoing initiatives in reclaimed rubber, recycled steel, and reused feedstock further reinforce our commitment to circularity.

By harnessing renewable energy, optimizing production processes, and developing sustainable materials, we minimize our environmental footprint while maintaining the uncompromised quality, reliability, and efficiency that define every BKT product, ensuring long-term value for our customers and the planet.

Q. As BKT looks beyond EXCON 2025 and into the next phase of its growth journey, which single strategic priority do you believe will most define the company’s direction for the rest of this decade, deeper customer engagement, technology-driven innovation, sustainability leadership, or a stronger global footprint?

The Indian tyre industry is experiencing strong and sustained growth driven by a rise in infrastructure development, increased mechanization and activity in mining, construction and material handling sectors. BKT is sharpening its focus across multiple priorities across deepening customer engagement, advancing technology-led innovation, strengthening sustainability leadership, and expanding its global footprint.

BKT has a strong global position, and a major reason for this success is our core philosophy of offering the right tyre for the right application. By collaborating closely with distributors, dealers, fleet operators, and industry bodies worldwide, we can tap into real-time insights from the field, how machines are being used, what challenges operators face, and where performance gaps exist. These inputs directly fuel our application-specific design process across 3,600 SKUs, enabling us to refine tread patterns, compounds, and construction types to meet evolving demands.

Q. How important is India as a manufacturing and sourcing hub for your global operations?

India plays a pivotal role in BKT’s global operations, serving as the heart of our manufacturing and sourcing ecosystem. Since our inception with the first plant in Aurangabad in 1987, India has been the foundation of our growth story. Today, our major plants located in Bhuj (Gujarat), Waluj (Maharashtra) and Bhiwadi and Chopanki (Rajasthan) form a robust network that powers our global supply chain.

Q. India’s operating environment is evolving rapidly from larger, more mechanised equipment and tougher duty cycles to greater pressure on uptime and total cost of ownership. How is BKT re-shaping its India strategy to stay ahead of these shifts?

As India’s infrastructure and mining sectors scale up, demand is shifting towards tyres that actively reduce downtime and enhance productivity. With the industry evolving, BKT is responding with a strategy built on scale, innovation, and deep vertical integration.

Innovation lies at the heart of BKT’s product development, guiding every aspect of our design and manufacturing process. We have announced plans to increase manufacturing capacity and expand carbon black production at our flagship plant in Bhuj. These investments strengthen supply reliability, energy efficiency, and sustainability, while we continue to invest in advanced tyre testing and technologies that enable operators to prevent unplanned interruptions.

From in-house carbon black manufacturing to our mould and drum production units and state-of-the-art R&D facilities, this integrated ecosystem allows us to achieve consistency, efficiency, and faster innovation cycles, catering to evolving market demand.

Additionally, we have created a strong growth plan to increase our revenue by 2.2x by FY2030, reaching approximately INR 23,000 crore from INR 10,600 crore in FY2025. This growth will be driven by three key areas: expanding our carbon black capacity, entering new tyre categories in the Indian market, and increasing our presence in the Off-Highway Tyre (OHT) segment. These steps will help us reach new customers, strengthen our market position, and drive steady long-term growth.

With this blend of market diversification, product excellence, and deeper vertical integration, we remain agile, leverage our global strengths, and continue delivering meaningful value as the industry evolves. Supported by strong government initiatives across infrastructure, agriculture, and mining, we foresee significant growth and a strong upward trajectory for these industries.

Q. How are you working with OEMs and contractors to ensure faster aftermarket support and availability of critical spares?

After-sales service has become a decisive factor for both OEMs and contractors, often influencing the final purchase decision.

At BKT, we provide strong on-site service support to ensure tyres deliver optimum performance throughout their lifecycle. Our commitment to proper after-sales assistance helps customers maximize product utilization, reduce downtime, and achieve significant cost savings.
