Dyutiman Chattopadhyay CTO Yokohama-ATG on Galaxy tyres innovation and sustainability in India
Dyutiman Chattopadhyay, CTO, Yokohama-ATG, shares insights on Galaxy’s application-led innovation, manufacturing excellence, and sustainability strategy in India.

To ensure reliability beyond the factory floor, we have built strong in-house testing capabilities. Every tyre we introduce is
rigorously tested to make sure it can withstand the tough and varied terrains found across India.

Q. As Galaxy deepens its presence in the Indian tyre landscape, what principles guide your strategy to translate global engineering excellence into locally relevant, value-driven solutions for Indian consumers and OEM partners?

While our global strategy is anchored in growth and innovation, we remain deeply mindful of the unique needs of each regional market. We tailor our products and marketing approaches to reflect local preferences, while staying true to the strength and consistency of our global brand. This is supported by close collaboration with distribution partners who bring extensive reach and a strong understanding of end-customer requirements.

At the manufacturing level, our focus is on driving greater automation across plants to ensure the highest standards of quality and consistency. Insights from local applications are carefully translated into product design by our teams, and our manufacturing teams ensure these specifications are executed with strict adherence to defined guidelines.

    Q. India’s construction landscape—spanning mining, ports, and infrastructure—has seen rapid growth driven by strong government capex. The operating conditions are extremely diverse, ranging from urban highways to rugged rural terrain and challenging mountain passes. How does Galaxy tailor its product development and validation processes to address this diversity ensuring that tyres deliver not just peak performance in controlled conditions, but consistent reliability in real-world Indian environments?

At Galaxy, we address the wide-ranging needs of the construction sector through our state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities that are built for flexibility. This allows us to produce one of the largest tyre portfolios in the industry. High levels of automation across our plants help us deliver consistent quality, ensuring tyres that offer strong performance, durability, and longer service life. The success of our bestselling Hulk range, now with over two million tyres sold, reflects this capability, as it has been specifically designed to perform reliably across varied construction applications.

We also develop application-specific compounds to ensure the right fit for different operating conditions, which directly supports higher productivity on site. This becomes increasingly important as customers demand faster and more efficient operations.

      Q. Galaxy offers a wide portfolio of high-performance tyres across construction, material handling, and earthmoving applications. How do you balance application-specific performance requirements—such as traction, load-bearing capacity, and durability—with practical considerations like cost-effectiveness and zero downtime, especially across segments where customer needs and usage conditions vary so widely?

At the core of our approach is a simple philosophy: understand the needs of customers across applications and respond with industry-first solutions. This mindset has been shaping the Galaxy brand for over a century.

For instance, the industry is steadily moving towards advanced radial tyre technology as demand grows for higher-performing solutions in construction and allied sectors. At our plants, we manufacture all-steel radial tyres using automated building machines, robust production processes, and application-specific compounds. These all-steel OTR tyres offer superior performance, longer life, and higher load-carrying capacity—qualities that are critical for demanding construction environments.

To ensure reliability beyond the factory floor, we have built strong in-house testing capabilities. Every tyre we introduce is rigorously tested to make sure it can withstand the tough and varied terrains found across India.

Lastly, customers look beyond upfront cost and focus more on total cost of ownership (TCO). Thanks to their durability and extended service life, Galaxy tyres deliver some of the lowest TCOs in the market.

        Q. What specific sustainability initiatives has the company implemented in material sourcing, manufacturing footprint that set you apart in the competitive Indian market?

At Galaxy, sustainability is at the core of our operations. It is deeply embedded in our manufacturing processes and material development strategy. In fact, we are among the first tyre manufacturers in India to scale the use of Recovered Carbon Black (rCB) for mass production.

Alongside this, we actively integrate recycled materials such as reclaimed and crumb rubber, as well as renewable alternatives like bio-based oils and silica derived from rice husk ash. These efforts have already helped us exceed our original 2030 targets for sustainable material usage, prompting us to set even more ambitious goals for the years ahead.

We continue to push the boundaries further. Currently, we are testing a solid tyre range made with up to 85% sustainable materials, which is expected to be ready for commercial launch this year. This marks another important step in our journey to make manufacturing more responsible, without compromising on performance or safety.

Our use of renewable energy has increased substantially over the years, backed by large-scale investments in solar, wind and hybrid energy projects.

Together, these milestones reflect our long-term commitment to innovation, circularity, and environmental stewardship, as we work towards building more sustainable products for the future.

          Q. India’s mobility ecosystem is entering a complex growth phase with infrastructure expansion, electrification, and changing usage patterns across urban and rural geographies. In this dynamic environment, what competitive edge do you believe Galaxy must sustain whether in technology, distribution, customer intimacy, or brand trust to shape the next chapter of tyre leadership in India?

Over the last 5 years, the government’s capex push and heavy investments have led to a substantial improvement in infrastructure. We at Galaxy, support these initiatives while keeping customer centricity in mind. Our priority is to further deepen our understanding of how industry needs are evolving and respond with a broader, more application-led product portfolio. We will continue to invest in advanced solutions such as all-steel radial tyres for rigid dump trucks, loaders used in construction and underground mining, as well as new ranges for tippers and mobile cranes, each designed to improve productivity, efficiency, safety, and sustainability on the ground.

Ultimately, we aim to deliver practical, future-ready solutions that help our customers perform better today, while supporting long-term, responsible growth for the industry.
