In a major boost to suburban rail connectivity in Tamil Nadu, the Indian Railways has approved a ₹757 crore project for constructing a fourth railway line between Tambaram and Chengalpattu. The move aims to ease congestion, enhance train operations, and meet the rising passenger demand along one of the busiest sections of the Chennai suburban network.
The new line will enable the segregation of fast and slow services, ensuring smoother movement of both suburban and long-distance trains. It is expected to significantly reduce travel time, improve punctuality, and enhance overall safety and capacity of the corridor.
According to railway officials, the project will include upgrades to signalling systems, station facilities, and track infrastructure to accommodate the increased traffic volume. Once completed, the fourth line will serve as a crucial link for improving regional mobility and supporting the growing suburban population around Chennai.
This development is part of the Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to modernize and expand its infrastructure, ensuring efficient and sustainable urban transport for the future.
