Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has approved the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the Mukhyamantri Green Ring Road Vikas Yojana, a key initiative aimed at creating sustainable and climate-resilient transport infrastructure in urban areas.

According to an official statement, the state government has allocated ₹200 crore for municipal corporations to develop green ring roads. These roads are designed to divert vehicular traffic away from city centres, reducing congestion and improving overall mobility.

The SOP, prepared on the advice of an expert committee led by the Principal Secretary, emphasises the use of advanced eco-friendly construction methods and durable materials. Provisions include carriageways, medians, integrated drainage and rainwater systems, utility corridors, tree plantations, traffic management facilities, and enhanced safety features.

To encourage sustainable practices, the SOP requires that at least 25 percent of construction materials be sourced from recycled products, cutting down on the use of virgin resources. Urban local bodies have also been directed to incorporate renewable energy in the projects to lower emissions and align with the state’s environmental goals.

Each project will undergo strict technical and environmental evaluations at the DPR stage to ensure compliance with the guidelines. The scheme has been positioned as a flagship initiative under Urban Development Year 2025, with the Chief Minister highlighting it as a significant step toward building future-ready, low-carbon road infrastructure in Gujarat.
