The Railway Board has approved a ₹383.78 crore project for the construction of a dedicated Vande Bharat coach maintenance depot at Tatanagar railway station in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. The approval clears the way for a new maintenance facility aimed at supporting the growing operations of Vande Bharat trains in the South Eastern Railway zone.
The project was proposed by the Chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway and had earlier been awaiting administrative and financial approval from the Railway Board. The formal clearance has now been issued, allowing the project to move forward from the proposal stage.
The new depot is planned in the Loco Colony area through an expansion and relocation of Tatanagar’s existing coaching depot. The facility is expected to strengthen the railway’s maintenance capacity for Vande Bharat trainsets and support the operation of additional high-speed services from the region.
Tatanagar has already emerged as an important Vande Bharat operating point in eastern India. Vande Bharat services currently connect Tatanagar with Patna in Bihar and Berhampur in Odisha. The dedicated maintenance infrastructure is expected to provide greater operational support as the number of high-speed services handled from the station increases.
The proposed depot will form part of the broader expansion of railway infrastructure at Tatanagar. Relocating the existing coaching depot to the Loco Colony area will create space for a dedicated facility designed around the maintenance requirements of Vande Bharat coaches.
The project also represents a significant investment in railway maintenance infrastructure, with the sanctioned amount of ₹383.78 crore covering the approved depot development. However, details such as the final land area, rake capacity, detailed works package and construction timeline have not been publicly specified in the available approval reports.
The approval comes alongside a separate proposal for four additional platforms at Tatanagar railway station. The platform proposal is not included in the ₹383.78 crore depot sanction and remains under consideration separately.
The development is expected to improve the maintenance ecosystem for Vande Bharat services in the region while creating additional capacity for future train operations. For South Eastern Railway, the new depot will provide dedicated infrastructure for high-speed train maintenance at one of its important passenger hubs.
The Tatanagar project is part of the wider expansion of railway infrastructure supporting Vande Bharat operations across the country. As more services are introduced, dedicated coaching and maintenance facilities are becoming an important requirement for ensuring regular inspection, servicing and upkeep of the trainsets.
The Railway Board’s approval now in place, the next major stage will be the tendering and execution of the depot project. The actual construction schedule will depend on the subsequent tender and award process.
