Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) handled a record 50 million tonnes of cargo in August, its highest monthly throughput so far, supported by stronger domestic economic activity, higher container trade and a diversified cargo mix.
Cargo volumes at India’s largest port operator increased 19 per cent from 41.9 million tonnes recorded in August last year.
The growth was spread across cargo categories. Dry cargo volumes increased 25 per cent year-on-year in August, while container volumes grew 15 per cent. Shipments of commodities such as coal, iron ore, limestone and other minerals also contributed to the rise.
APSEZ’s international operations added to the overall growth. North Queensland Export Terminal (NQXT) in Queensland, Australia, contributed to the volumes, while Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT) in Sri Lanka continued to scale up its operations. Existing assets such as Mundra in Gujarat, Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and the Port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania also reported growth.
The August performance followed cargo volumes of 43.1 million tonnes in April, 48.3 million tonnes in May, 46.8 million tonnes in June and 46.3 million tonnes in July.
During the first five months of FY27, APSEZ handled 234.4 million tonnes of cargo, 16 per cent higher than the corresponding period a year earlier. Dry cargo volumes rose 17 per cent during the period, while container volumes increased 15 per cent.
India’s real GDP grew 7.8 per cent in the April-June quarter of FY27, with manufacturing expanding 9.2 per cent and services growing 10 per cent. At the same time, geopolitical tensions, changes in shipping routes and supply-chain realignments continue to influence global trade flows.
APSEZ operates a network of ports and gateways in India and overseas, covering a range of commodities and trade routes. Its operations also include marine services and logistics, providing connections between ports and inland markets.
The company’s logistics rail volumes stood at 54,131 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in August, an increase of 6 per cent from July.
APSEZ is targeting annual cargo handling of 1 billion tonnes by FY31.
