Mahindra Aerostructures Pvt. Ltd. (MASPL), part of the Mahindra Group, has secured a multi-year contract from Airbus to manufacture and supply fuselage skins for the A320 family of aircraft, further expanding the Indian company’s role in Airbus’ global aerospace supply chain. Deliveries under the programme are targeted to begin in 2028.
Under the contract, Mahindra Aerostructures will manufacture fuselage skins for Sections 18 and 19 of the Airbus A320neo and A321XLR aircraft. These sections cover portions of the rear fuselage and tail of the aircraft. The components will be manufactured at Mahindra Aerostructures’ facility in Bengaluru and subsequently supplied to Airbus’ manufacturing facility in Augsburg, Germany.
The scope of the programme includes the manufacture of eight fuselage skins for Section 18 and three fuselage skins for Section 19, taking the total to 11 fuselage skin panels. The new contract, along with a recently concluded roll-forming contract from Airbus, supports Mahindra Aerostructures’ planned strategy of developing capabilities to manufacture larger fuselage sections in the future.
As part of a multi-year industrialisation roadmap for the programme, Mahindra Aerostructures will expand its specialised manufacturing capabilities through the establishment of advanced chemical milling, surface treatment and stretch-forming production lines. Initial engineering activities, including tooling design, process-flow updates, qualification and inspection, are already underway.
The company said that manufacturing fuselage skins for the A320 family requires advanced process capabilities and precision at scale. Vinod Sahay, President, Mahindra Aerospace, Advanced Technologies and Trucks & Buses, said the company would invest in specialised technologies and manufacturing infrastructure to build critical capabilities in India and support Airbus’ requirements from its Bengaluru facility.
The contract further strengthens the longstanding relationship between Mahindra Aerostructures and Airbus. Mahindra Aerostructures has previously secured contracts to manufacture and assemble the main fuselages of Airbus’ H125 and H130 helicopters, besides supplying components and sub-assemblies for Airbus commercial aircraft programmes.
Jürgen Westermeier, President and Managing Director, Airbus India and South Asia, said the agreement would further strengthen India’s role in Airbus’ global supply chain. He also highlighted the precision engineering capabilities available in India, with the manufacture of complex components for the A320neo and A321XLR aircraft directly from Bengaluru adding to the country’s aerospace manufacturing footprint.
The latest contract marks another step in the expansion of Mahindra Aerostructures’ aerospace manufacturing capabilities in India. With specialised production infrastructure being developed for the A320 family programme, the company is strengthening its ability to undertake increasingly complex aerostructure manufacturing work for global aircraft manufacturers.
The development also adds to India’s participation in the international aerospace supply chain, with aircraft components manufactured domestically being integrated into Airbus’ global production network. The programme is expected to further strengthen Mahindra Aerostructures’ position in high-precision aerospace manufacturing as deliveries begin in 2028.
