APM Terminals, the global ports operator of A.P. Moller–Maersk, has commenced construction of its new Laldia Container Terminal in Chattogram, Bangladesh, marking a major investment in the country’s port infrastructure. The terminal represents an estimated $550 million investment and is being developed under a long-term concession agreement with the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA).
The groundbreaking ceremony marks the beginning of construction of the new terminal, which is expected to significantly expand container-handling capacity at the Port of Chattogram. The project is being developed as part of Bangladesh’s efforts to modernise its maritime infrastructure and strengthen the efficiency of its international trade gateways.
The Laldia Container Terminal is planned as a modern, high-capacity facility designed to handle growing containerised trade volumes. The project is expected to introduce advanced terminal infrastructure and equipment, supporting more efficient vessel handling and cargo movement through Chattogram.
The terminal is being developed under a 30-year concession, under which APM Terminals will finance, construct and operate the facility. The project is expected to create additional capacity at Bangladesh’s principal seaport while supporting improvements in port productivity and logistics efficiency.
The development is also expected to strengthen Bangladesh’s position within regional and international supply chains. As the country’s trade volumes continue to grow, additional modern container-handling capacity is expected to help reduce congestion, improve turnaround times and enhance the reliability of cargo movement.
The project forms part of APM Terminals’ broader strategy of investing in port infrastructure in high-growth markets. The company has been expanding and upgrading its terminal network with a focus on improving capacity, operational efficiency and connectivity across global trade routes.
For Bangladesh, the Laldia terminal represents a significant addition to its maritime infrastructure pipeline. The investment is expected to support the country’s long-term trade ambitions by providing additional container-handling capacity and modern terminal facilities at Chattogram.
Once completed, the terminal is expected to become an important part of the Port of Chattogram’s future container-handling network, supporting the movement of goods for Bangladesh’s manufacturing, export and import sectors.
