The project has been envisaged as a major shipbuilding and repair facility, with the state looking to leverage its long coastline and existing maritime infrastructure to attract investments into the sector.
Rajapur Port Shipbuilding Plan Gains Momentum as 100 Acres Acquired in Maharashtra
The proposed shipbuilding project at Rajapur Port in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district has gained momentum with the acquisition of around 100 acres of land, clearing a key hurdle for the development of the planned shipbuilding facility. The project is part of Maharashtra’s broader push to strengthen its maritime infrastructure and establish a stronger presence in India’s shipbuilding and ship-repair ecosystem.
The Rajapur shipyard project has been identified as a significant shipbuilding development in Maharashtra. A government project listing had earlier estimated the development of a shipbuilding yard at Rajapur at around ₹2,200 crore, under Rajapur Shipyard Private Limited.
The development comes as Maharashtra steps up efforts to build a comprehensive shipbuilding, ship-repair and maritime infrastructure ecosystem. The state has introduced a dedicated shipbuilding, ship-repair and ship-recycling policy aimed at attracting around ₹6,600 crore in investments, while offering incentives including capital subsidies, faster clearances and concessional land leases.
Maharashtra is also pursuing larger greenfield shipbuilding infrastructure, with Dighi in Raigad district recently identified for a proposed ₹20,000-crore shipbuilding cluster. The cluster is expected to include large shipyards as well as ancillary industries involved in engine manufacturing, steel and component fabrication, shipboard equipment and other supporting activities.
The Rajapur development therefore adds another important project to Maharashtra’s expanding maritime infrastructure pipeline. With land availability now progressing, the project could support the state’s objective of attracting private investment, generating employment and strengthening domestic shipbuilding and repair capabilities.
