Federal Express Corporation (FedEx) plans to invest approximately $150 million (over ₹1,400 crore) to develop a new integrated air cargo hub at GMR Cargo City, located at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), Delhi. The facility is aimed at strengthening air cargo connectivity across North and East India and linking businesses in these regions with global markets.

Spread across around 2,30,000 sq ft, the proposed facility will bring FedEx’s international gateway and pickup-and-delivery operations together under one integrated setup. The hub is designed to increase the company’s package processing capacity from around 600 packages per hour to 5,000 packages per hour, with scope for further expansion as cargo volumes grow.

The facility will incorporate automation and advanced cargo-handling capabilities to improve processing efficiency and facilitate faster movement of shipments. The investment is expected to support the growing requirements of businesses involved in manufacturing, exports, e-commerce and other time-sensitive sectors that depend on reliable air freight connectivity.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held in New Delhi in the presence of Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu. The Minister said India should emerge as a backbone for global air cargo movements, while Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha highlighted ongoing efforts to address bottlenecks affecting air cargo movement.

The new hub comes as Delhi airport continues to strengthen its position as a major air cargo gateway. GMR Cargo City is being developed in phases as an integrated cargo and logistics ecosystem, bringing together cargo operators, logistics companies and allied services. The development is expected to further enhance Delhi’s role in supporting India’s international trade and logistics network.

The FedEx investment also adds to the company’s broader expansion of cargo infrastructure in India. Earlier this year, FedEx broke ground on another fully automated air cargo hub at Navi Mumbai International Airport, involving a long-term investment exceeding ₹2,500 crore. Together, these developments underline the company’s focus on expanding its cargo network in key Indian trade corridors.

The Delhi facility is expected to strengthen air freight capacity, improve shipment processing and provide businesses across North and East India with more efficient access to international markets, supporting the country’s growing trade, manufacturing and e-commerce ecosystem.
