Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has commenced its dedicated international freighter operations, marking a major milestone in its emergence as a new air cargo gateway for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Western India. The inaugural international cargo flight, operated by IndiGo CarGo, departed for Sharjah on August 2, carrying around 20 tonnes of general cargo and perishable goods.
The first shipment also included bonded transfer cargo from Mumbai and Ahmedabad, demonstrating NMIA’s capability to seamlessly integrate with existing logistics networks while handling customs-compliant international cargo movement. Airport officials said the successful operation validates the airport’s readiness to support growing export-import (EXIM) trade through efficient cargo handling infrastructure.
The commencement of international freighter services is expected to ease capacity constraints at Mumbai’s existing airport and provide exporters with an additional gateway for high-value and time-sensitive shipments. NMIA’s cargo infrastructure has been designed to cater to a diverse range of commodities, including perishables, pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, electronics and general merchandise, supporting the region’s expanding trade requirements.
With dedicated cargo facilities, strategic multimodal connectivity and proximity to key industrial and logistics hubs, Navi Mumbai International Airport is positioning itself as a significant logistics centre for western India. The launch of international freighter operations represents an important step in the airport’s long-term strategy to develop into a major aviation and cargo hub while strengthening India’s global supply chain connectivity.
