Siemens Secures ₹263-Crore RVNL Contract for Rail Electrification of Rishikesh–Karnaprayag Line

Siemens Limited has secured a ₹263-crore contract from Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) to provide advanced overhead rail electrification systems for the Rishikesh–Karnaprayag railway line in Uttarakhand. The project is a key component of the strategically important Char Dham connectivity corridor, aimed at improving rail access to the Himalayan region while enhancing sustainable transportation infrastructure.

Under the contract, Siemens will supply and implement Rigid Overhead Catenary Systems (ROCS) and Flexible Overhead Catenary Systems (FOCS) across tunnels, bridges, open sections, railway yards and associated infrastructure along approximately 102.5 track kilometres of the railway line. The electrification systems are designed to ensure reliable power supply and efficient train operations across the project’s challenging terrain.

The Rishikesh–Karnaprayag rail line is one of Indian Railways’ most significant infrastructure projects in the Himalayan region. Once completed, the line is expected to improve all-weather connectivity, reduce travel time, enhance mobility for residents and pilgrims, and provide a dependable transport link in an area frequently affected by adverse weather conditions. The project will also support regional economic development and strengthen connectivity to key pilgrimage destinations in Uttarakhand.

Commenting on the order, Rajeev Joisar, Chief Executive Officer, Mobility Business, Siemens Limited, said the Rishikesh–Karnaprayag corridor represents a major step towards delivering sustainable and reliable rail connectivity in one of India’s most demanding geographical regions. He noted that the latest contract further reinforces Siemens’ expertise in advanced rail electrification technologies and builds on the company’s successful implementation of rigid overhead catenary systems in several landmark railway projects across the country.

The order strengthens Siemens’ growing portfolio in India’s railway modernisation programme and underscores its continued role in supporting the electrification of critical rail infrastructure. The project is expected to contribute to Indian Railways’ broader objective of expanding energy-efficient, low-emission rail transport while improving connectivity in strategically important regions.
