Five leading commercial vehicle manufacturers have now joined the Centre’s fleet modernisation initiative aimed at replacing older trucks and buses operating in the Delhi-NCR region, expanding industry participation in a programme designed to accelerate the adoption of cleaner and more efficient vehicles.

The latest additions include major manufacturers from the truck and bus segment, strengthening the government’s effort to phase out ageing commercial vehicles that contribute significantly to vehicular emissions in the National Capital Region. The programme offers a structured framework for fleet owners to replace older vehicles with newer models that comply with the latest emission and safety standards.

The initiative is being implemented as part of a broader strategy to improve air quality in Delhi-NCR while modernising the region’s commercial transport fleet. Under the programme, participating OEMs are offering incentives and support mechanisms to encourage vehicle replacement.

The expansion follows the recent onboarding of Ashok Leyland, which became the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to formally join the scheme. With five manufacturers now participating, fleet operators have a wider range of replacement options across different vehicle categories and applications.

The programme targets older diesel-powered trucks and buses that have completed their operational life and are considered major contributors to pollution. Authorities believe replacing such vehicles with modern alternatives will help reduce emissions while improving fuel efficiency, safety and fleet productivity.

The initiative also aligns with ongoing efforts to promote cleaner mobility solutions and support the transition towards advanced commercial vehicle technologies. Industry stakeholders view the programme as an important step towards fleet renewal in one of India’s busiest freight and passenger transport corridors.

As more manufacturers join the scheme, the government expects the programme to gather momentum and encourage large-scale replacement of ageing commercial vehicles across the Delhi-NCR region.
