The ambitious Great Nicobar Island Development Project is poised to become a transformative initiative for India’s maritime trade, strategic connectivity, and economic growth, according to Andaman and Nicobar Islands Lieutenant Governor Admiral D.K. Joshi. He described the project as a critical step toward strengthening India’s position in the Indo-Pacific and enhancing its role in global shipping networks.
Speaking at a conference on the development, security, and ecology of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Lieutenant Governor highlighted the islands’ growing strategic importance and said the project would leverage their location near some of the world’s busiest international shipping routes.
The multi-component infrastructure project includes an International Container Transshipment Terminal, a greenfield international airport, a power generation facility, and township infrastructure. Once developed, it is expected to reduce India’s dependence on foreign transshipment hubs, improve maritime logistics efficiency, and strengthen the country’s trade competitiveness.
Located close to the strategically important Malacca Strait, through which a substantial share of global maritime trade passes, Great Nicobar is being positioned as a key logistics and maritime hub capable of serving international shipping traffic while enhancing India’s economic and strategic influence in the region.
The project is also expected to generate economic opportunities through investments in port-led development, logistics, tourism, aviation, and supporting infrastructure. Proponents of the initiative believe it will create employment, stimulate regional development, and strengthen India’s maritime ecosystem over the long term.
Addressing concerns raised by critics, the Lieutenant Governor maintained that the project has undergone extensive scrutiny and that safeguards are in place to balance development objectives with environmental protection and the interests of indigenous communities. He reiterated that the project should be viewed not only through a strategic lens but also as a long-term economic and connectivity initiative for the country.
With infrastructure development gathering momentum and key approvals already secured, the Great Nicobar Project is expected to play a significant role in advancing India’s maritime ambitions, strengthening supply chain resilience, and establishing a stronger presence in the rapidly evolving Indo-Pacific region.
