The Union Government has allocated a record ₹11,486 crore for railway infrastructure and safety works across the Northeastern region in the 2026–27 Union Budget, underlining its continued focus on strengthening rail connectivity in the strategically important region. The allocation represents a nearly five-fold increase compared to the average annual allocation of around ₹2,122 crore during 2009–14.
According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, railway projects worth ₹72,468 crore are currently under implementation across the Northeastern states. The enhanced budgetary support is expected to accelerate the execution of ongoing projects and improve connectivity within the region as well as with neighbouring countries.
Several major railway projects are progressing across the region, including the rail link to Mizoram, the ongoing railway connectivity project to Kohima in Nagaland, and the resumption of work on key rail infrastructure in Manipur. Proposals aimed at expanding railway connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh are also at an advanced stage of planning.
A key project under development is the Kokrajhar–Gelephu rail link, which will provide the first railway connection between India and Bhutan. The project is expected to strengthen cross-border connectivity, trade, and regional economic integration under India’s Act East policy framework.
The increased allocation is expected to support new railway lines, doubling works, capacity augmentation projects, station development, safety upgrades, and modernization initiatives across the Northeast. Improved rail infrastructure is seen as critical for enhancing passenger mobility, reducing logistics costs, and supporting economic development in the region.
Railway officials have stated that alongside infrastructure expansion, special attention is being given to environmental and safety considerations. Advanced technologies, including AI-based monitoring systems and wildlife detection solutions, are being deployed on railway corridors to improve operational safety while minimizing impacts on local ecosystems.
The record allocation reflects the government’s broader strategy of integrating the Northeastern states more closely with the national transportation network while supporting trade, tourism, investment, and regional development through improved rail connectivity.
