Road infrastructure projects being supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Meghalaya are expected to play a key role in accelerating economic growth, improving regional connectivity, and strengthening trade links across Northeast India, according to the agency. The projects form part of JICA’s broader Northeast Road Network Connectivity Improvement Programme.

JICA highlighted that the highway projects underway in Meghalaya will improve access between remote regions, major commercial centres, and international trade gateways. Enhanced road connectivity is expected to reduce travel time, lower logistics costs, and facilitate the smoother movement of people and goods across the region.

Among the key initiatives are highway improvement projects along the Shillong–Dawki corridor, an important route connecting Meghalaya with the Bangladesh border. The upgraded corridor is expected to strengthen cross-border trade, tourism, and economic activity while improving transportation efficiency in the state.

JICA is also supporting connectivity projects in the Garo Hills region, including the improvement of sections of NH-127B, which will connect with the under-construction Dhubri–Phulbari Bridge across the Brahmaputra River. Once completed, the bridge and associated road network are expected to significantly reduce travel time between Assam and Meghalaya and create stronger trade and logistics linkages.

According to JICA, improved transportation infrastructure will provide better access to markets, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and economic opportunities, particularly in remote and underserved areas. The agency believes these investments will contribute to higher trade volumes, increased tourism activity, and greater regional integration within the Northeast.

The projects are part of a wider effort to strengthen the Northeast’s connectivity with neighbouring states and international markets. By improving strategic transport corridors, the initiative is expected to support industrial development, encourage private investment, and enhance the region’s competitiveness as an emerging economic hub.

JICA has been a long-term partner in infrastructure development across the Northeast, supporting multiple road, bridge, and connectivity projects aimed at fostering sustainable economic growth and improving regional integration. The agency believes that continued investment in transportation infrastructure will remain critical to unlocking the economic potential of the region.
