West Bengal has been brought under the National Water Metro Programme, paving the way for the introduction of modern water-based urban transport services in and around Kolkata. The move is part of a broader maritime development strategy that includes planned investments of approximately ₹22,700 crore in ports, waterways, and coastal infrastructure across the state.
According to officials, Kolkata has been identified as one of the cities to be developed under the national initiative aimed at promoting sustainable and efficient urban mobility through inland waterways. The programme seeks to leverage existing river networks to provide an alternative mode of transportation while reducing congestion on roads.
The proposed Water Metro system is expected to enhance passenger connectivity across the Kolkata metropolitan region by integrating ferry services with existing transport networks, including metro rail, buses, and suburban rail systems. The initiative is also expected to improve last-mile connectivity and offer environmentally sustainable transportation options.
Alongside the Water Metro project, the government has outlined a maritime infrastructure development plan involving investments worth ₹22,700 crore. The programme includes projects related to port modernisation, inland waterways, coastal infrastructure, logistics facilities, cargo terminals, and maritime tourism.
A significant focus will be placed on strengthening the capabilities of riverine and coastal transport infrastructure to improve cargo movement and logistics efficiency across eastern India. The investments are expected to support trade growth, industrial development, and enhanced connectivity with neighbouring regions.
Officials stated that the infrastructure push will include upgrades to port facilities, development of multimodal logistics networks, expansion of inland water transport systems, and improvement of passenger ferry services.
The initiative is also expected to support river tourism, waterfront development, and cruise tourism activities, creating new economic opportunities and employment in the state.
West Bengal’s strategic location and extensive network of rivers make it a key region for the development of inland water transport and maritime infrastructure. Improved connectivity through waterways is expected to complement existing road and rail networks while reducing transportation costs.
The projects align with national efforts to promote port-led development, strengthen inland waterways, and create integrated logistics ecosystems under broader infrastructure modernisation programmes.
