India–Canada CEPA talks gain momentum ahead of Piyush Goyal’s Canada visit.

India and Canada are moving ahead with negotiations on the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), signalling renewed momentum in bilateral trade relations between the two countries.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is scheduled to visit Canada in May 2026, where he will lead a high-level Indian business delegation, aimed at strengthening commercial engagement and accelerating trade discussions.

The upcoming visit follows recent interactions between Goyal and Canada’s Minister of International Trade, where both sides reviewed progress and emphasised the need to fast-track CEPA negotiations. The discussions are part of a broader effort to rebuild and deepen economic ties after a period of diplomatic strain.

The CEPA, once finalised, is expected to cover a wide range of areas including trade in goods and services, investment flows, and emerging sectors, with both nations aiming to significantly expand bilateral trade in the coming years.

Officials have also indicated plans for reciprocal business delegations, with Canada expressing interest in sending industry representatives to India, particularly in sectors such as aerospace, defence, and advanced technologies.

The renewed engagement reflects a strategic push by both countries to unlock untapped trade potential, diversify supply chains, and create new opportunities for businesses, as negotiations for the CEPA move forward.
