The Government of India has sanctioned 300 railway infrastructure projects spanning 13,808 km under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan since FY 2022–23, marking a major expansion of the national rail network.

The projects include a mix of 51 new railway lines, 17 gauge conversion works, and 232 track doubling projects, aimed at enhancing capacity, reducing congestion, and strengthening connectivity across regions.

These developments are part of a broader push to improve multi-modal connectivity, with a focus on linking ports, industrial corridors, border areas, and remote regions, while also easing freight movement and passenger traffic.

The Ministry of Railways has integrated project planning with the Gati Shakti framework, enabling better coordination between ministries, faster approvals, and data-driven infrastructure planning.

In addition to sanctioned projects, the Railways has also approved 982 surveys covering 67,010 km, indicating a strong pipeline of future projects under the same framework.

The key projects under the programme include doubling, multi-tracking, and new line developments across high-density corridors, which are expected to improve network efficiency, reduce logistics costs, and support economic activity in underserved regions.

The initiative reflects the government’s focus on integrated infrastructure development, where railway expansion is aligned with roads, ports, and logistics networks to create a seamless transportation ecosystem across the country.
