The Delhi government has approved a ₹802 crore initiative to redevelop and modernise 241 key road corridors across the national capital, officials said, as part of efforts to enhance urban mobility, reduce congestion and improve overall transport infrastructure.

The redevelopment programme will focus on upgrading major arterial roads, improving pavement quality, enhancing drainage and pedestrian infrastructure, and strengthening road safety features such as signage, crossings and lighting. Officials said the intervention aims to provide a smoother, safer and more efficient commuting experience for residents, commuters and commercial vehicles alike.

Under the plan, priority will be given to corridors with high traffic density, recurrent bottlenecks and significant connectivity value. The selected routes are expected to facilitate seamless movement between residential, commercial and industrial zones, and support first- and last-mile connectivity to mass transit systems such as metro lines and bus rapid transit corridors.

The funding is part of a broader investment strategy to modernise urban road networks in response to growing travel demand and transport pressures in the capital region. By improving road quality and traffic management, authorities expect reductions in travel times, enhanced freight movement and better integration with other modes of transport.

Officials said that work on the redevelopment initiative will be rolled out in phases to minimise disruption to daily traffic. Detailed project planning, tendering and contractor mobilisation are expected to begin shortly, with construction activities monitored under structured quality and safety protocols.

Urban planners welcomed the announcement, noting that targeted upgrades along major corridors can significantly ease congestion and improve urban mobility when complemented by public transport expansion and traffic demand management measures.

The initiative reflects a continuing focus on strengthening the city’s infrastructure backbone as Delhi manages increasing urbanisation, economic activity and commuter flows.
